Our Story · KALAKARI
Born in craft.
Carried across
oceans.
KALAKARI started with a simple frustration — why was it so hard to find a kurti that felt like you? Not a compromise between culture and comfort.

Built by the Diaspora
Two countries.
One wardrobe.
Our founder grew up between two countries — the richly embroidered silks her family brought from India and the practical, easy pieces she needed in Canada. KALAKARI is her attempt to build a bridge.
“Designed in Canada, handcrafted by artisan workshops in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh — places where block printing is not a trend. It is heritage.”
How We Work
Small batches.
No shortcuts.
We work directly with family-run studios, paying fair wages and working in small batches. When a run sells out, it sells out — we would rather have scarcity than cut corners.
Minor variations in print placement and dye tone are not defects — they are the hallmarks of something made by a human being, not a machine.

Why KALAKARI
Craftsmanship — skilled, artful work done with intention. The word our artisans use for what they do every day.
We pay directly to artisan studios, not through middlemen. Every craftsperson knows their work is valued.
Scarcity over compromise. Small runs mean every piece is made with the attention it deserves.
Bandhani, block printing, Kalamkari — techniques passed through generations, not revived for trends.
We visit our partner workshops. We know the families behind each piece. Distance creates shortcuts.
Voices
From our customers
& our craftspeople
The story lives at both ends — the hands that make, and the women who wear.

“Finally a kurti I can wear to the office on Monday and to Diwali on Friday. It just works for the life I actually live.”

“My grandfather carved this block. I still use it. When KALAKARI orders, they want the real thing — they never ask us to hurry.”

“The slight variations in the print — I was worried at first, then I realised that's what makes it mine. No one else has exactly this piece.”
Beauty made by hand,
with care, is worth having.
Every piece you wear keeps an ancient craft alive. Designed in Canada. Made in India. Made for you.
